A major emergency services response was launched on Shields Road in Byker on Tuesday evening after reports of a serious incident involving a person being injured.
A large police and emergency presence descended on the busy Newcastle street just before 7.30pm, with officers quickly putting a cordon in place. Several police vehicles remained behind the barrier overnight, and traffic monitoring cameras confirmed a continued police presence at the scene into the evening.
Northumbria Police said they were called at around 7.25pm to reports of a disturbance in the area. In a statement, the force confirmed: “Emergency services are in attendance. A section of the road has been closed to traffic. There is no wider risk to the public.”
The North East Ambulance Service also responded to the incident, deploying two ambulances, a clinical team leader, and its Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). The Great North Air Ambulance Service was also called to the scene to assist.
A patient who was reported to have suffered serious injuries was treated at the scene before being taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle for further care.
Emergency services have not yet released further details about the nature of the incident, and enquiries are ongoing.
