The family of a teenager who died after being struck by a vehicle in Gateshead have paid tribute to their “beautiful baby”, saying they are “broken into a million pieces” following her death.
Emergency services were called to Lobley Hill Road, near the junction with Schoolhouse Lane, at around 10.40pm on Friday, June 12, following reports of a collision.
Northumbria Police said a 16-year-old girl, who can now be named as Jessica Metters, from Consett in County Durham, had been struck by a silver Ford Fiesta.
Jessica was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital with serious injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she sadly died a short time later.
Paying tribute to Jessica, her family described the devastating impact of her loss.
They said: “We have lost our beautiful baby. Words can’t describe the pain we are suffering.
“Jessica was the most loving, precious innocent little girl and cared so deeply for her loved ones.
“She lit up every room she walked in and always made a good situation out of a bad one, with that cheeky little smile and most beautiful eyes.
“Our hearts hurt so bad without her here with us, we miss her so much already.
“Our family is broken into a million pieces.”
Police said their thoughts remain with Jessica’s family and friends during this difficult time and that officers will continue to offer support as enquiries continue.
