Saltwell Park marked a major milestone as hundreds of people came together to celebrate the 150th anniversary of one of Gateshead's best-loved green spaces.

Families, local residents and visitors enjoyed a packed day of free activities celebrating the park's rich history and vibrant community.

Pete Moss spoke to people from the Saltwell Park Model Boat Club, Tyneside Beekeepers Association, Better Gateshead, Friends Of Saltwell Park, Gateshead Council and more during the four hour broadcast.

The celebrations showcased everything that has made Saltwell Park a focal point of Gateshead life for a century and a half. Visitors enjoyed live music, family creative workshops, interactive circus workshops and nature-themed stories and activities organised by Gateshead Libraries.

One of the biggest attractions proved to be Gateshead Council's Street Scene vehicles, with youngsters climbing aboard the machinery for photographs and getting a close-up look at the equipment that helps keep the borough looking its best.

First opened in 1876, Saltwell Park remains one of the North East's most treasured parks, attracting millions of visits each year. Today's celebrations not only marked its remarkable 150-year history but also looked ahead to its continuing role as a place for recreation, culture, heritage and community for generations to come.
